Parker Gay, Jr. for his comments on our paper. The strong reaction that our work has elicited illustrates the critical importance of this topic for understanding the role of basement structure in basin evolution, as well as the range of opinions that exist in the exploration community. Our approach has been to develop and apply a mechanical rationale for understanding basement control of sedimentation and diagenetic patterns in the Alberta Basin.
