20th Volume: Chemistry—A European Journal has come a long way since its beginnings in April 1995, when ten papers appeared in the first issue. That issue, which featured work by Anthony C. Legon and co-workers on the cover (see top left of the cover for this issue), contained only Full Papers. Since then the journal has expanded significantly both in terms of volume as well as scope and types of articles published. Today, Chemistry—A European Journal also regularly publishes Communications, Concepts, Reviews, and Minireviews and appears 52 times a year. All content is available online prior to the appearance of the printed issues. The cover picture of the first issue of the 20th volume shows the transition from 1995 to the present day as illustrated by the covers of the first issue of each of the interim years. 1 This picture clearly shows both the consistent quality and breadth of chemistry covered over the years by Chemistry—A European Journal.1 2000 Papers Published! Continued growth and international appeal have accompanied Chemistry—A European Journal over the years and 2013 was no exception. For the first time, the 52 issues of the journal contained more than 2000 top quality articles. Submissions were received from 61 countries and significant increases were observed from The Netherlands (+40%), Sweden (+28%), and Spain (+20%) among the Owner Societies, as well as from Brazil (+90%), Russia (+44%), Japan (+18%), and China (+15%) from around the world. Fresh New Look: When the journal was initially launched, the cover and layout reflected the close ties with the mother journal Angewandte Chemie. In the meantime, the face of European chemistry has changed dramatically with the development of the family of ChemPubSoc Europe journals, serving the needs of different communities. The new design of Chemistry—A European Journal not only represents a modernization of the layout, but also strengthens the links to the rest of the ChemPubSoc Europe family. Chemistry—A European Journal is owned not by one, but now by 15 chemical societies, with the Swiss Chemical Society officially becoming an Owner Society in 2014.1 Abstracts: The new layout incorporates a number of new features to increase the visibility and discoverability of the content. From this issue onwards, all Communications will, like their Full Paper counterparts, contain an abstract as their first paragraph, in which the motivation, methods, results, and conclusions are briefly summarized. The headings in the Full Papers now more clearly define the different sections of the paper, and the new tables are more clearly discernible from the main text. In addition, the society ownership of the journal by ChemPubSoc Europe is reflected on each page of every article published. Cover Profiles: Starting with Issue 2 this year, Chemistry—A European Journal will publish Cover Profiles, in which the authors of the work featured on the front cover will be given the chance to provide additional insight into the work presented. The first of these will focus on work by our Editorial Board member Karl Anker Jørgensen and his co-workers on “Hydrogen-Bonding in Aminocatalysis”. Social Side: In the course of 2013, Chemistry—A European Journal launched its Facebook page and Twitter account (see www.facebook.com/ChemistryAEuropeanJournal; www.twitter.com/ChemEurJ), providing its readers with information about events of general interest to the chemistry community as well as details and links to top quality papers and research featured in Chemistry—A European Journal and the other ChemPubSoc Europe journals. Better Service: Behind the scenes, a lot of work and development has been going on to provide our authors and reviewers with a better service. From early in 2014, Chemistry—A European Journal will move to a new editorial system, Editorial Manager, which has already been successfully implemented by the materials journals in our group, such as Advanced Materials and Small. This system will help speed up the decision-making process and facilitate the transfer of more specialized material between journals, thereby lessening the burden on the peer review process. It′s App′ening Soon: The Angewandte App, which was launched in August 2012, has proven to be highly successful and extremely popular with readers. The technology developed for this is now being successively rolled out for the ChemPubSoc Europe family of journals. The Apps for the European Journal of Inorganic Chemistry, the European Journal of Organic Chemistry, ChemCatChem, and ChemSusChem are already available, those for the other journals including Chemistry—A European Journal, with its new layout, will follow shortly. The App will allow readers to stay up to date with the latest articles in Early View, download articles and issues for offline perusal, and save their favorite articles for quick and easy access. The dynamic reference browser shows references in context, and the “scrubber” tool makes it easy to navigate within an issue. In connection with these developments, the Anywhere Article as the new user interface to Wiley Online Library will also be coming soon.1 Changes across the Board: 2014 marks the next in a series of regular changes to the Editorial Board. Several of the Editorial Board members have been with the journal for a large part of its development and have been responsible for its success through their contributions both as authors as well as reviewers and advisors. Accordingly, a big thank you goes to Gerard van Koten (University of Utrecht), Mieczyslaw Makosza (Polish Academy of Sciences, Warsaw), François Mathey (Nanyang Technological University, Singapore), Teruaki Mukaiyama (The Kitasato Institute, Tokyo), Dieter Oesterheldt (Max-Planck-Institut für Biochemie, Martinsried), Michael N. Paddon-Row (University of New South Wales, Sydney), Alexander Pines (University of California, Berkeley), Pierre Sinaÿ (Université Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris), Gerhard Wegner (Max-Planck-Institut für Polymerforschung, Mainz), and Karl Wieghardt (Max-Planck-Institut für Bioanorganische Chemie, Mülheim) who have completed their terms of office on the Editorial Board. Chemistry Ambassadors: As part of the development of Chemistry—A European Journal and to recognize some of those who have made extra special contributions to the success, the journal has instigated an Honorary Board. The inaugural members of this are listed in Table 1 and include the founding chairman Jean-Marie Lehn, who also has a new paper on “Highly Organized, Hexameric Supramolecular Architectures” in this issue (p. 179). They are all leaders in their respective fields and are familiar with the top quality Chemistry—A European Journal provides its readership. More details can be found on the journal homepage (www.angewandte.org) and the lectures given at the Anniversary Symposium in Berlin are still available to view and enjoy at ChemistryViews (http://www.chemistryviews.org/view/0/angewandtechemie125.html).1 Welcome to the Family: At the other end of the age scale, ChemElectroChem has just been launched by ChemPubSoc Europe and Wiley-VCH. This exciting new journal covers all aspects of electrochemistry, from analysis and catalysis, to bio and nano, and energy. ChemElectroChem publishes Communications, Full Papers, Reviews, Minireviews, Highlights, and Concepts. The co-chairs of the journal, Bing-Wei Mao (Xiamen University), Wolfgang Schuhmann (Ruhr-Universität Bochum), and Jean-Marie Tarascon (Université de Picardie, Amiens) together with the Editor-in-Chief, Greta Heydenrych, have assembled a truly international Editorial Board containing many of the leaders in the various fields of electrochemistry. The response from the community has been amazing and the first issue will appear in January 2014, with many papers already available online on the journal homepage (www.chemelectrochem.org).1 Something Special for Everyone: The other members of the ChemPubSoc Europe family of journals also had a successful 2013. A number of the journals featured special issues on key topics in their respective fields. ChemMedChem: Obesity, Diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome; ChemPhysChem: Aggregation of Small Molecules; Ultrafast & Theoretical Spectroscopy; Photo- and Bioelectrochemistry; NMR Spectroscopy; ChemSusChem: Shaping Nanostructures for Applications in Energy Conversion and Storage; ChemCatChem: The World of Catalysis—A Perspective from The Netherlands; Functional Porous Materials; Homogeneous Catalysis; Advanced Microscopy for Catalysis; Frontiers in Catalysis Research; European Journal of Organic Chemistry: Foldamers; European Journal of Inorganic Chemistry: Spin-Crossover Complexes; Polyoxometalates; Small-Molecule Activation by Reactive Metal Complexes. In addition, ChemPlusChem had a special issue in memory of Detlef Schröder, one of its former Editorial Board members, who tragically passed away suddenly.1 Nobel Achievements: Congratulations go to the most recent recipients of the Nobel Prize for Chemistry, Martin Karplus from the Université de Strasbourg, France, and Harvard University, USA, Michael Levitt from Stanford University, USA, and Arieh Warshel from the University of Southern California, USA, for their work on developing “multiscale models for complex chemical systems”. Papers published by all three can be viewed on Wiley Online Library, including a recent one by Martin Karplus and co-workers, which appeared in Chemistry—A European Journal (Chem. Eur. J.­ 2012, 18, 8978), and others by Arieh Warshel and colleagues, which appeared in the ChemPubSoc Europe journals ChemBioChem (ChemBioChem­ 2012, 13, 215) and ChemPhysChem (ChemPhysChem­ 2008, 9, 1767, and 2009, 10, 1125). Young at Heart: Chemistry—A European Journal may be entering its 20th volume, but it is still young at heart. The journal has always looked to promote young inspiring researchers who are shaping the future of chemistry. Last year, for example, I had the pleasure to attend the 3rd Transatlantic Frontiers of Chemistry Symposium in Seeon; here I got to meet over 60 of the rising stars in chemistry based in Germany, the US, the UK, and Brazil. It was a fascinating experience full of energy and stimulating discussions (see the Guest Editorial by A. N. Alexandrova, S. M. Huber, A. Tavasssoli, Chem. Eur J.­ 2013, 19, 15777). Chemistry—A European Journal has also been a strong supporter of the European Young Chemist Award, which has been organized and sponsored by the Italian Chemical Society (SCI) and the Italian Consiglio Nazionale dei Chimici (CNC) and awarded at each of the previous EuCheMS European Chemistry Congresses (see the Guest Editorials by B. Pignataro, Chem. Eur. J.­ 2008, 14, 11252; Chem. Eur. J.­ 2010, 16, 13888; Chem. Eur. J.­ 2012, 18, 14881). As part of the continuation of this collaboration, we shall be publishing a special issue featuring research from previous finalists of the European Young Chemist Award. The 5th EuCheMS Chemistry Congress is scheduled to take place in Istanbul in Turkey from August 31 to September 4th. The list of plenary speakers for the event include Luisa DeCola (Strasbourg University), member of the Editorial Board of ChemPlusChem, Luis M. Liz-Marzán (CIC biomaGUNE, San Sebastian), new member of the Editorial Board of Chemistry—A European Journal, Sir Venki Ramakrishnan (University of Cambridge), Yusuf Yagci (Istanbul Technical University), Alexander J. B. Zehnder (Alberta Water Research Institute in Edmonton and Nanyang Technological University), and Don Hilvert (ETH Zürich), co-chairman of the Editorial Advisory Board of ChemBioChem. In addition, a special invitation plenary lecture will be given by Dan Schechtman (Technion, Haifa, and Iowa State University), winner of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2011, and the EuCheMS lecture 2014 will be presented by Maurizio Prato (University of Trieste), who has published more than 20 papers in Chemistry—A European Journal.1 The 20th Volume Is Hereby Declared Open: All the features discussed above are certainly nice to have and help make the journal attractive and improve the discoverability and visibility, but more important than all of these is of course the quality of the scientific content presented. What better way to start the 20th volume of Chemistry—A European Journal than by providing our readers with a bumper issue packed full of excellent chemistry from top chemists around the world, including papers from 13 of our Editorial Board members. This issue contains Concept Articles by Pascal Dumy et al. on “Oxime Ligation” (p. 34) and by Rebecca A. Murphy and Richmond Sarpong on “Heathcock-Inspired Strategies for the Synthesis of Fawcettimine-Type Lycopodium Alkaloids” (p. 42). The back cover features work from the groups of two of our new Editorial Board members, namely, Jean-François Nierengarten and Nicola Armaroli on “Supramolecular Photosynthetic Models” (p. 223). The inside cover depicts work on “Platforms for Enhanced Biosensing Applications” by new Board member Martin Pumera and his group (p. 217). The frontispieces at the beginning of the Communications section and the Full Paper section relate to work on “A General Method for N-Methylation of Amines and Nitro Compounds with Dimethyl Sulfoxide” by Chao Wang and Jianliang Xiao and their co-workers (p. 58) and “Tetrafluorination of Sugars as Strategy for Enhancing Protein–Carbohydrate Affinity: Application to UDP-Galp Mutase Inhibition” by Board member Jesús Jiménez-Barbero and Stéphane P. Vincent (p. 106). The issue also contains a number of papers from the groups of long-standing Board members Bernhard Kräutler on “Hydroxymethylated Phyllobilins” (p. 87), Karl Anker Jørgensen on “Organocatalytic Asymmetric Epoxidation of α,β-Unsaturated Aldehydes” (p. 64), Masakatsu Shibasaki on “Enantioselective Total Synthesis of Thuggacin B” (p. 68), and Steven Ley on “Preparation of Boronates by Using a Cryo-Flow Reactor” (p. 263), as well as a joint paper between the groups of François Diederich and new Board member Nicola Armaroli on “Cyanobuta-1,3-dienes as Novel Electron Acceptors for Photoactive Multicomponent Systems” (p. 202). In addition, several of our new Editorial Board members have work from their respective groups featured in this issue, namely Jairton Dupont on a “Magnetic Ionic Liquid Based on Tetrachloroferrate” (p. 72), A. Stephen K. Hashmi on “Polycyclic Indole Skeletons” (p. 292), and Hermenegildo García on “N-Doped Graphene Derived from Biomass as a Visible-Light Photocatalyst” (p. 187).
