Abstract
La nature variable de nombreuses oeuvres d’art contemporain nécessite que celles-ci soient abordées comme des continuums. C’est donc l’étude de l’entièreté de leur cycle de vie qui permet de mieux saisir en quoi elles consistent, conceptuellement et matériellement. Dans cet article, nous proposons une approche qui permet de tenir compte de la nature changeante des oeuvres d’arts médiatiques et qui permet également de documenter la formation de leur identité. Dans un second temps, cette approche est illustrée à l’aide d’une figure de cas, soit l’oeuvre As the Hammer Strikes (A Partial Illustration) (1982) de l’artiste canadien John Massey. La reconstruction du cycle de vie de cette oeuvre permet de montrer à quel point chacune de ses expositions, chacune de ses versions, mais aussi sa circulation dans le monde de l’art et sa préservation ont contribué à définir ce qu’est As the Hammer Strikes (A Partial Illustration).
