L'article s'intéresse aux mécanismes de production de la forme urbaine dans la région de Montréal. Il fait mention des nombreuses réflexions menées depuis plus de 30 ans au sujet de la forme de l'agglomération et de l'étalement urbain. Plus spécifiquement, la problématique des espaces naturels, verts et libres est posée vis-à-vis la planification urbaine et les pressions d'urbanisation. L'évolution de l'utilisation du sol à Laval met en perspective les processus d'urbanisation, qui sont la déstructuration du domaine agricole et des bois, par le morcellement et la constitution de friches, suivis de la planification des espaces libres. La conclusion situe Laval dans la dynamique métropolitaine, en évaluant les mouvements d'expansion urbaine et des politiques de conservation des espaces agricoles et naturels.
