Abstract
Publié en 1980, en pleine dictature militaire argentine, le roman Respiration artificielle de Ricardo Piglia situe ses lecteurs d’emblée au seuil de la perte et d’un possible « salut », qui pourrait apparemment être atteint par la pratique d’une certaine qualité littéraire dans la lecture. Ce « salut » n’est pas à comprendre littéralement comme une résurrection, une restitution ou une compensation, mais comme un certain traitement transformateur de la perte. Dans le roman de Piglia, la littérature apparaît comme le médium où la perte, inscrite dans la pensée moderne, peut être ainsi traitée et transformée. Cette transformation de la perte a lieu par l’intermédiaire de la figure d’un disparu qui, devenant emblématique d’un ensemble de pertes – sens, corps, histoire, mémoire, pays natal, etc. –, guide les efforts de lecture du narrateur et des autres personnages du roman.
