Si l’on met en parallèle les apports de Freud et de Winnicott, le développement psychique se présente comme le passage d’un état mental où l’individu et l’environnement forment une unité à un état plus évolué où l’intrapsychique devient une entité fonctionnelle distincte. Dans ce transit, les concepts de pulsion et de trauma, entre autres, connaissent une nouvelle définition : chemin faisant, se dégage une nouvelle conception de la réalité psychique sous le terme de troisième topique. Un texte ultérieur décrira les répercussions de ces propositions au plan de la méthode analytique.
