Abstract
Cet article porte sur le conflit identitaire canadien et la difficulté de produire une représentation de la totalité sociale. Par une analyse des discours parlementaires entourant le référendum de 1995 sur la souveraineté du Québec, les auteurs font ressortir les différentes modalités de représentation du corps politique : le discours souverainiste met de l’avant l’image d’une communauté ayant le droit à l’autodétermination, alors que le discours fédéraliste se fonde sur une vision fragmentaire de la société. La résolution de la crise constitutionnelle paraît donc improbable dans les termes du débat actuel, car, au-delà des intérêts politiques des protagonistes, on constate l’existence d’irréconciliables conceptions concernant la vie collective.
