Les transformations sociales et culturelles survenues au cours des dernières décennies ont fortement ébranlé l’idée de modernité. C’est dans ce contexte que le concept de modernités multiples a été développé pour rendre compte de la situation contemporaine. Cette idée doit-elle aussi, à l’épreuve de la mondialisation, être remise en question ? Afin de réévaluer le concept de modernités multiples, cet article emprunte à des thèmes avancés par l’auteur au cours des dernières années : au premier plan, la place qu’occupent les États-nations et les États révolutionnaires dans le monde contemporain et les mouvements sociaux, classiques et nouveaux (associés aux fondamentalismes religieux, mais aussi aux mouvements postmodernes, postmatérialistes et multiculturels), tout en portant un regard attentif aux paradoxes liés à leurs interactions, plus particulièrement dans la deuxième moitié du xxe siècle. À la lumière de l’analyse, une conclusion s’impose : aussi différents soient-ils, les mouvements qui caractérisent le monde contemporain reprennent à leur compte, au-delà de leur critique de la modernité classique — et de l’Occident —, les thèmes mêmes de cette modernité. Dans des termes qui leur sont propres, ils empruntent à des prémices et à des thèmes fondamentaux du discours de la modernité et participent à l’émergence de nouvelles manifestions de ce discours.
