Qui dit conter une histoire, dit mentir. Dans tout récit le(s) narrateur(s) présente(nt) une composition fictive, inventée, imaginée — bref : un mensonge, comme nous l’assurent entre autres Vargas Llosa, Nietzsche et Proust. Plus intéressant encore sont les personnages qui (se) mentent. Telle est la contribution de Sand. Dans deux romans en particulier, Jacques et Ma soeur Jeanne , Sand met en jeu des personnages qui mentent, qui se mentent les uns aux autres et qui se mentent à eux-mêmes. Il y a évidemment des narrateurs qui mentent, mais au-delà du mensonge qu’est l’écriture narrative, ces narrateurs malmènent le lecteur avec leurs menteries. Le mensonge narratif tient chez Sand une place considérable à la fois pour la structure narrative et pour la thématique.
