Résumé Cet article propose aux décideurs et aux spécialistes de l’organisation du travail un cadre de référence qui permet de classifier les diverses formes d’organisation qui ont émergé au cours des dernières années en réponse aux nouvelles demandes de l’environnement. Il est illustré à l’aide de quatre configurations organisationnelles typiques (allégée, en réseau, virtuelle, en équipes) qui sont contrastées par le croisement de deux axes. Le premier axe, relatif à la répartition du travail, traite de la flexibilité qui peut être obtenue par l’aménagement des capacités de production à l’interne ou par le recours à des moyens de production à l’externe. Le deuxième axe, relatif à la coordination des efforts, traite de l’encadrement des unités de travail pour faire face à l’ambiguïté et à l’incertitude associées à la réalisation du travail. On peut assurer la coordination et l’évaluation du travail en faisant appel soit à divers mécanismes de contrôle qui relèvent d’entités ou de niveaux hiérarchiques supérieurs, soit à ceux-là mêmes qui effectuent le travail. Le défi des gestionnaires consiste à mettre en place la configuration la mieux adaptée à l’environnement compte tenu du travail à réaliser.
