Le passé d’une personne est-il révélateur ? Les valeurs morales sont-elles indifférentes à l’identité personnelle ? Une personne peut-elle changer radicalement si les circonstances changent ? Ce sont quelques-unes des questions générales qui entourent l’interrogation spécifique aux pays postcommunistes, celle de la possibilité ou non d’ignorer le fait qu’un politicien qui déclare aujourd’hui « ses convictions démocratiques » a collaboré avec la police politique. Cette question, posée à travers la problématique de l’identité personnelle, porte sur une réalité difficile à imaginer pour un citoyen d’une société démocratique qui n’a connu ni la torture, ni l’intimidation provoquées par la police politique sous le communisme, du temps où il existait un délateur pour vingt personnes. Cet article examine les possibles conséquences que pourrait avoir l’ouverture des archives de la police politique sur l’identité de ceux qui ont été « l’objet de la surveillance » et sur celle des anciens délateurs. En tenant compte du fait que l’identité personnelle se définit en termes de continuité et d’une certaine unité, cet article analyse deux cas « exemplaires », même s’ils sont des cas limite : le premier porte sur la récupération de l’identité personnelle par l’aveu et le deuxième sur l’héroïsme de préserver la cohérence identitaire dans les cas exceptionnels.
