Le Chef-d’oeuvre inconnu de Balzac raconte le drame du peintre Frenhofer, créateur devenu stérile, qui, par la rencontre d’une jeune modèle, croit pouvoir surmonter l’échec et réaliser « le » chef-d’oeuvre. Mais la toile devient écran illisible à force de repentirs et préfigure la mort du peintre. La Belle Noiseuse de Rivette, inspiré du texte de Balzac mais aussi des toiles de Bernard Dufour, met en scène le temps réel de la peinture et le temps fictif du cinéma : rejouant, avec la question de la mimèsis , l’aporie qui frappe le rapport du modèle à sa représentation et porte à l’image manquante du film. C’est celle de l’impossible tableau, c’est-à-dire de ce que l’art ne peut prendre à la vie que sous peine de mort.
