L’ Essai sur les révolutions de Chateaubriand est représentatif de l’abondant recours aux notes de bas de page dans ce genre et de la diversité des fonctions dont ces dernières sont investies. Il illustre particulièrement bien le procès intenté à l’érudition à un moment de crise du savoir où tous les systèmes de pensée dogmatique sont mis en difficulté. On y retrouve également la tendance à insérer dans la note des témoignages, des confidences sur la vie privée qui provoquent le glissement de l’essai vers l’autobiographie. On constate enfin que Chateaubriand y met au point des thèmes et des procédés d’écriture qui renforcent l’esthétique de la variété à l’œuvre dans l’essai et qui accentuent la fonction expérimentale du genre.
