La notion de " rationalité axiologique " est souvent mal comprise. Elle peut être interprétée pourtant comme l'esquisse d'une théorie des sentiments normatifs ayant un domaine de validité beaucoup plus large que des théories alternatives. Cette théorie se distingue des théories culturalistes et naturalistes et aussi des théories rationnelles des normes comme les théories d'inspi- ration fonctionnaliste ou les théories issues des diverses branches de la tradition utilitariste. Elle évite le réductionnisme des premières et résout les paradoxes auxquels se heurtent les secondes, comme le paradoxe du vote ou le paradoxe du vol. Elle permet d'expliquer toutes sortes de phénomènes normatifs que ces théories en vigueur ne permettent pas facilement d'expliquer, qu'il s'agisse de phénomènes massifs, comme la valorisation universellement positive ou négative de certains comportements, ou de données particulières tirées d'enquêtes sociologiques. La cause de la faiblesse des théories rationnelles classiques des normes peut être facilement cernée. Elle réside dans le fait qu'elles assimilent rationalité et rationalité instrumentale. Or la notion même de " rationalité axiologique " indique qu'on ne peut rendre compte des phénomènes normatifs à l'aide de la seule rationalité instrumentale. La conception étroite de la rationalité à laquelle conduit son assimilation à la ratio- nalité instrumentale explique en partie l'abus des explications irrationnelles des sentiments normatifs.
