Abstract
Literary theorist Jean Rousset identified the ‘first encounter scene’ of the Western love story, described its constituent elements and discussed its importance to narrative portrayals of interpersonal attraction and emotional attachment. It is not surprising that such a scene appears often in film, and that the literary elements described by Rousset have cinematic equivalents. The Artist (Michel Hazanavicius, 2011) provides a particularly clear example of how the cinematic constituents of such a scene function in commercial entertainment. After a close analysis of an early sequence of The Artist, the article argues that other films, including 8 fois debout/Eight Times Up (Xabi Molia, 2010), make use of the first encounter scene to situate individual characters within historically determined social contexts.
