Depuis la parution de Minorités francophones : assimilation et vitalité des communautés dans la série Nouvelles perspectives canadiennes du ministère du Patrimoine canadien, les études se multiplient qui visent à racheter l’assimilation des minorités francophones en plaçant plutôt l’accent sur leur vitalité linguistique ou culturelle. Dans sa contribution en ce sens au récent numéro de Recherches sociographiques sur le thème des minorités, André Langlois a prétendu remettre en question le paradigme de l’urbanisation comme catalyseur de l’assimilation et celui de la concentration territoriale comme condition nécessaire à la persistance linguistique d’une minorité. La présente note met en évidence d’importantes lacunes et faiblesses dans la méthode et le raisonnement de Langlois, tout en faisant ressortir à quel point les recensements confirment les paradigmes mis en cause.
