Abstract
Prêtre séculier ayant oeuvré auprès des Micmacs entre 1735 et 1762, Pierre Maillard a d’abord retenu l’attention des historiens en raison du rôle déterminant qu’il a joué dans le maintien de l’alliance franco-micmaque. Pourtant, depuis la fin du XIXe siècle, les historiens catholiques ont fait de lui une figure emblématique des missionnaires de l’Acadie du XVIIIe siècle. Sous leur plume, Maillard incarne des valeurs qui supportent l’établissement de l’Église catholique en Acadie. Finalement, cette figure est récupérée dans un processus de commémoration qui sert à légitimer l’enracinement de l’Église catholique dans la communauté d’Halifax.
