Abstract
L’immigration renvoie comme en miroir à l’identité collective et au sentiment d’altérité. D’où l’intérêt d’une plongée dans le passé pour dénaturaliser les catégories actuelles, mesurer l’écart dans la façon dont se constituent les perceptions interethniques, tout en soulignant des processus similaires ou tout au moins comparables pour délimiter les frontières entre « eux » et « nous », autochtone et étranger, immigrés « assimilables » ou « indésirables ». Dans la France méridionale des années vingt, à un moment où l’immigration connaît une forte poussée et se trouve en débat, quelles représentations construisent le rapport à l’étrangeté, à l’étranger et finalement à l’immigré? Il ne s’agit pas d’opposer terme à terme le « Français » à « l’étranger », mais de décrire la gamme de nuances et d’ambivalences qui composent les multiples visages de celui-ci.
