Abstract
Promover la educación en las cárceles de hoy es difícil. Examinar las causas estructurales de esta situación compleja es el propósito de este artículo. Para producirlo se llevó a cabo un estudio de los documentos oficiales, las leyes y las prisiones fueron visitadas en varios países de América Latina. Entre los principales temas tratados, se incluyen: la impunidad y el fracaso del sistema de justicia; los límites del castigo; el castigo como ideología; imaginario punitivo y las contradicciones institucionales.
