NRD-guide spurious mode suppressor using self-contained periodic planar EBG structure

Abstract
A new mode suppressor for nonradiative dielectric (NRD) waveguides is presented in the design of hybrid planar/NRD circuits. This suppressor circuit makes use of self-contained planar periodic EBG (electromagnetic bandgap) structure that is part of the planar ground plane of the NRD guide to attenuate unwanted waveguide modes generated in the NRD-guide by modal transition of planar and NRD-guide or other discontinuity effects. The topology of the mode suppressor is presented with design steps. Its usefulness is experimentally demonstrated in an NRD filter application in which an increase of the out-of-band rejection level of the filter is obtained.
