Abstract
Dans les pays occidentaux, le nombre de convertis à l’islam va en augmentant et le phénomène semble toucher davantage les femmes que les hommes. Alors que l’adhésion à l’islam implique l’incorporation d’un nouvel éthos, nous examinons la construction performative du sujet féminin musulman occidental. Les converties interrogées produisent des discours standardisés sur la femme et sur la famille par lesquels elles critiquent les modèles de genre occidentaux et affirment leur appartenance à la communauté musulmane. Tout en reflétant les rapports de pouvoir qui gouvernent les sociétés française et québécoise, les converties formulent des projets politiques qui se posent en alternative aux choix séculier et moderne et contribuent à reconfigurer les domaines du privé et du public, ainsi que les frontières de la marge et du centre. L’article est basé sur un terrain ethnographique comparatif mené auprès de femmes converties en France et au Québec.
