Abstract
L’oeuvre de George Sand montre une volonté exceptionnelle et encore peu explorée de penser la lecture et, à partir d’elle, de réfléchir sur les structures qui fondent notre vie en société. Deux romans, publiés à des tournants importants de sa carrière —Le secrétaire intimede 1834 etLe marquis de Villemerde 1860 —, explorent le pouvoir de la lecture et des lecteurs. Considérés en lien avec l’autobiographie de la mi-siècle, ces romans mettent en scène des protagonistes qui sont payés à lire et à écrire pour le compte de quelqu’un d’autre et dont le travail plus ou moins bien accompli détermine la conclusion de l’intrigue. S’y lit l’intérêt croissant de Sand pour la lecture comme activité créatrice et comme acte fondateur d’une société à venir ; s’y lit également son désir de penser l’individu et la communauté de manière simultanée, au-delà des antinomies fondatrices de la société moderne.
