Abstract
Notre article envisage un pan de l’histoire de l’idée européenne jusqu’alors resté dans l’angle mort. Mettant l’accent sur l’histoire de cette idée au cours de la première moitié du dix-neuvième siècle, l’article propose un aperçu des grandes orientations de la question et fait apparaître les points sujets à discussion et les lacunes à combler. Les réactions et les projets européens des hommes politiques, des diplomates, des philosophes et des écrivains que nous envisageons sont replacés dans le contexte des bouleversements politiques, socio-économiques et culturels de cette époque marquée par la montée en puissance du nationalisme mais aussi par une multitude formidable de façons de penser l’Europe et de concevoir son identité.
