Cet article vise à faire une brève esquisse du fonctionnement de l’anaphore, de la cataphore et de la déixis telles qu’elles sont définies dans les travaux des linguistes français et francophones. Dans la première section, nous avons étudié l’anaphore en regard de la déixis et de la théorie de la localisation référentielle. Cela nous a permis de démontrer que cette théorie présente le texte comme élément central de la définition de l’anaphore et établit une relation structurelle, pas forcément coréférentielle, entre antécédent et anaphorique. À l’opposé de ce procédé référentiel se trouve la déixis, procédé spatiotemporel qui nécessite la présence du référent dans l’espace de renonciation au moment où l’occurrence est prononcée. Dans la seconde section, nous avons examiné l’opposition texte-situation et la théorie mémorielle, qui met en valeur le mode de donation du référent. Enfin, l’opposition cataphore/anaphore a fait ressortir l’asymétrie totale entre ces deux procédés.
