Dans les régions hemi-arctiques, les patrons d'enneigement sont causés par l'arrangement spatial des unités de relief et de végétation. A Poste-de-la-Baleine, l'étude de la distribution du couvert de neige en fonction des unités de relief démontre que les dépressions et les versants affectés d'un microrelief accusé ou de fortes dénivellations sont les sites privilégiés d'accumulation. Les structures végétales hautes exercent un meilleur contrôle des conditions d'enneigement que les structures végétales basses. Dans les milieux forestiers, la relation entre la densité et la profondeur de neige est linéaire: à une augmentation de la profondeur correspond une hausse de la densité. Ces variations s'expriment le long d'un gradient altitudinal. Dans les milieux ouverts dominés par des formations basses, l'influence du vent est déterminante: elle se traduit par des profondeurs de neige très variables et des densités uniformes et généralement élevées. La saturation topographique est un concept utile pour caractériser les conditions d'enneigement de ces espaces ouverts : l'accumulation de neige a tendance à atténuer le relief et à régulariser le profil des versants. D'une année à l'autre, les patrons d'enneigement semblent constants.
