Cet article tente une synthèse du rôle du langage dans le développement de la pensée, et plus particulièrement, du style cognitif. En effet, par l’intermédiaire d’une analyse épistémologique, l’auteur étudie la relation entre le langage et la pensée à travers différents courants de pensée. Passant en revue les courants « idéaliste » et « réaliste », il en arrive à la conclusion que seule l’approche matérialiste de la relation langage-style cognitif permet de cerner la complexité de ces deux variables et de leur relation. À partir des pratiques sociales des individus, le langage devient une variable intermédiaire dans le développement du style cognitif.
