Tout projet encyclopédique est un projet intellectuel et éditorial qui vise à thésauriser, organiser et transmettre des connaissances constituées en domaines de savoir. Appartenant au genre didactique, le « livre des livres » qu’est une encyclopédie ne se conçoit pas sans une certaine représentation de la culture, avec ses figures d’autorité et son image du lecteur. La médiologie (R. Debray) a mis en avant la dépendance de la circulation des pensées et de leurs portées d’avec les modalités de leur présentation et de diffusion : le commerce des idées via le véhicule matériel. Nous nous interrogeons plus particulièrement, en référence à des pratiques de recherche documentaire et de lecture-écriture dans les encyclopédies électroniques (à partir de l’exemple de l’ Encyclopaedia Universalis ), sur quelques effets de l’informatisation de ce type de document, que nous ramenons à quatre caractères significatifs : abstraction , fragmentation , homogénéisation , juxtaposition .
