Abstract
Cet article prend le débat américain sur la mort du roman, qui a éclaté dans les années 1960, comme un exemple de crise culturelle. C'est que la mort du roman n'est qu'une crise parmi d'autres, un épisode dans une longue séquence de morts qui, au-delà de la littérature, a aussi touché Dieu, l'homme, l'auteur, la musique, la peinture, l'Histoire, les idéologies et qui rejoint, dernièrement, le livre et la culture de l'imprimé. De façon à comprendre comment cette dernière crise, la fin du livre, reproduit la mort du roman, je vais décrire les deux comme les manifestations d'un même imaginaire qui s'empare d'une situation de transition pour la présenter comme une fin.
