It is pointed out that the intensity and flux of the magnetic field about a current-carrying conductor can be precisely calculated with formulas derived from the standard definitions of the ampere, volt, and tesla. The flux from electromagnetically complicated apparatus can be measured with simple instruments. It is noted that DC fields under 70 microteslas, the Earth's field flux in northern Canada, are benign without question. Also, patients experience without discomfort fields up to two teslas in magnetic-resonance imaging. Meaningful speculations about the effects of 60 Hz AC fields on people are expected to be reached by the conclusion of Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) research, which is scheduled for 1993 completion.>
