Abstract
Mike McCann is a UK occupational health (OH) physician who has worked in Police OH in London for many years. He completed his doctoral thesis in South Africa on alcohol abuse in the workplace. For OH professionals, the medical and OH aspects of this book are the obvious attractions. The other authors include a drug abuse researcher, an expert in arbitration and labour relations, and a South African labour court judge. Although this comprehensive volume is intended primarily for South African and to some extent Canadian markets, the medical and OH aspects and the general employment aspects of substance abuse at work have detailed and general application that is universal and applicable to alcohol and drug use at work in a UK context. The book recommends procedures for identifying, controlling and treating substance abuse, and includes very useful templates and procedural guidelines for pre-employment testing and fair disciplinary action, for example, introducing and implementing a comprehensive workplace substance abuse policy. There are 20 chapters of which 14 are of direct relevance to medical and OH issues. A very comprehensive table of contents is subdivided into sections, enabling easy reference.
