Engendré et reproduit au quotidien par les pratiques spatiales et par l'interaction des acteurs sociaux, le territoire ne se réduit pas à un espace politique ou à une représentation idéologique. Pour expliquer la genèse territoriale, pour comprendre sa double nature objective et cognitive, réelle et représentée (symbolique aussi), cet article s'attache d'abord à décrire — par l'analyse de la contribution des sociologues, des anthropologues et des géographes — la véritable nature des pratiques spatiales qui le construisent. Il analyse ensuite de quelle façon elles affrontent, tout en le produisant, le contexte des systèmes sociospatiaux. Il étudie enfin comment, au prix d'une ruse permanente à l'égard de ces systèmes, les individus s'affirment les producteurs compétents de l'espace géographique et de ses territoires.
