Abstract
En el Québec previo a la Confederación Canadiense, la organización de la cuarentena contra las epidemias podía definirse por su carácter improvisado y provisional, atribuible a menudo a una falta de confianza en la etiología contagiosa de las enfermedades epidémicas. En este contexto aparecieron soluciones alternativas a la cuarentena tal y cómo estaba organizada en la Grosse-Île, la más elaborada fue la del doctor William Marsden. Veremos pues las concepciones acerca de la etiología del cólera en Québec, incluidas las del doctor William Mardsen; por otra parte se analizará, de manera general, los fundamentos del sistema de cuarentena, la cuarentena tal y cómo se operaba en la Grosse-Île antes de la Confederación Canadiense así como la solución alternativa propuesta por dicho médico.
