Abstract
Le Disparu de Salonique (2005), le deuxième roman d’Aliette Armel, est illustré de 25 photographies en noir et blanc prises par le grand-père de l’auteure, lors de sa traversée des Balkans avec l’armée d’Orient entre 1915 et 1917. Le présent travail commencera en considérant le statut générique du texte en tant que récit de guerre et « roman-photo ». Nous étudierons ensuite l’espace dans Le Disparu de Salonique sous deux optiques. En premier lieu, nous considérerons la « photographie de l’espace », examinant le rapport entre l’espace représenté et la description verbale de l’espace. Nous aborderons en deuxième lieu « l’espace de la photographie », considérant le choix de photos à inclure dans le texte, la distribution des clichés à travers le récit, et la création d’un autre espace textuel, un espace iconique qui s’ajoute à l’espace verbal du récit. Nous verrons que les photos reproduites dans le texte ont des fonctions mimétique, ethnographique et narrative qui aident le lecteur à concrétiser l’univers fictif.
