Une étude visant à relier la steatite trouvée dans les sites dorsétiens de l’Ungava et les carrières de cette région est actuellement en cours. La méthode de caractérisation de la steatite par l’analyse des concentrations en éléments des terres rares, mise au point lors de travaux portant sur les carrières de l’est des États-Unis, a été appliquée. Les données actuellement disponibles concernent les sources de steatite de trois régions du Labrador ainsi que huit affleurements de l’Ungava d’une part, et des objets témoins recueillis dans trois sites dorsétiens, soient Nu-nainguq dans l’Ungava oriental, Qilalugarsiuvik en Ungava occidental, et un site sur l’île du Diana, au N-0 de la baie d’Ungava, d’autre part. Les regroupements obtenus suggèrent la possibilité de relations entre l’Ungava occidental et le Labrador remontant au moins à 140-570 AD. Par ailleurs, la partie sud de l’île du Diana, occupée pendant près de 1500 ans depuis le début de notre ère révèle des témoins de fabrication sur place de récipients en steatite provenant vraisemblablement des carrières de Wakeham dans le détroit d’Hudson. Compte tenu du caractère très préliminaire des résultats actuels, le texte présenté ici vise surtout à illustrer l’application de cette méthode à l’Ungava.
