Abstract
L’opposition obstinée aux droits politiques des Françaises a fait l’objet de diverses interprétations. L’auteure s’intéresse ici à la réaction antiféministe – en rhétorique et en pratique – quant à la mobilisation des féministes et pour le suffrage féminin, à la veille de la Grande Guerre. La nature des positions « anti- » est analysée au prisme d’autres idéologies réactionnaires, présentes sur l’ensemble de l’échiquier politique. Contester l’antiféminisme s’est révélé difficile du fait de la nature diffuse et souvent peu cohérente de ce courant, conjointement à son ancrage dans les institutions culturelles et politiques. L’auteure qui s’appuie sur l’abondante littérature antiféministe de l’époque, analyse le visage inédit de facettes plus anciennes du patriarcat et la pseudoscientificité de justifications s’inspirant du darwinisme social. Les résistances à tout changement démocratique, sous couvert d’insatisfaction à l’égard du système électoral en vigueur, ont contribué à recréer la « guerre des sexes ».
