The use of antiretroviral combinations in HIV-1 infection has led to a dramatic improvement in the morbidity and mortality associated with HIV/AIDS [ 1 ]. The concept of combining therapeutic agents is not unique to HIV infection and has proven successful in a variety of medical areas, most notably cancer. For example, the most significant successes in the fight against childhood leukemias were seen when anticancer drugs were used in combination. The use of combination therapies has also proven instrumental in advances made against infectious diseases such as tuberculosis and bacterial endocarditis. These keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. This process is experimental and the keywords may be updated as the learning algorithm improves.
