Abstract
À leur arrivée à Limoilou en 1902, les capucins toulousains héritent d'une paroisse pauvre au bord de la banqueroute. Avec prudence, ils relèvent les finances malgré de nombreuses difficultés dont un grave incendie qui ravage l'église Saint-Charles en 1916. Leur oeuvre pastorale vise un encadrement moral et social du milieu en pleine expansion. En 30 ans, la population du quartier est multipliée par vingt et de nouvelles paroisses sont fondées. L'action des capucins déborde le cadre religieux, animant la vie culturelle et communautaire et les engageant dans l'action sociale directe en particulier pendant la crise économique de 1930. Au fil des années, la communauté se « canadianise ». Le noviciat établi à Limoilou en 1903, permet une adaptation de l'ordre des frères mineurs capucins aux réalités locales et, après un « régime français » de 30 ans, les postes de curé et de gardien du couvent passent définitivement aux mains des Québécois en 1934.
