Les économistes s’intéressent depuis longtemps à divers aspects de l’éducation comme, par exemple : la mesure de l’output, l’analyse des déterminants du succès scolaire ou la pédagogie. Cette étude se situe dans cette ligne de préoccupations. En effet, elle cherche à voir si certaines caractéristiques académiques contenues dans le dossier de l’étudiant au moment de son admission contribuent à expliquer en partie ses résultats à l’université. Cette étude porte sur des étudiants inscrits à un baccalauréat en administration. Toutefois étant donné les liens qui existent entre l’économie et l’administration, il est probable que plusieurs des résultats obtenus se vérifieraient aussi dans le cadre d’études sur des étudiants en économie. Cette analyse fait ressortir plusieurs éléments importants. On note par exemple, une relation positive très significative entre la performance de l’étudiant dans le programme et ses résultats scolaires au cégep ainsi que ses résultats à des tests d’admission. De plus l’étudiant qui a choisi la concentration « sciences » au cégep réussit en général mieux que celui qui vient de la concentration « sciences humaines » même si, à l’intérieur de celle-ci, l’étudiant a choisi un profil « sciences administratives ».
