Abstract
La configuration des rapports entre religions et monde scolaire au Québec s’est radicalement transformée entre 1996 et 2008, passant d’un système confessionnel à un aménagement entièrement laïque. Après avoir retracé les étapes clés de ce processus de laïcisation scolaire, cet article distingue deux conceptions normatives divergentes du rôle attendu de la religion dans l’enseignement : une approche confessionnelle, d’inspiration psychopédagogique, et une conception laïque, abordant la religion comme un objet de savoir critique. Le nouveau programme scolaire d’éthique et culture religieuse, implanté dans les écoles québécoises depuis septembre 2008, s’ancre certes dans une conception laïque de l’éducation, mais se double d’une visée de formation citoyenne, laquelle comporte une part d’idéalisme.
