Abstract
Les salaires des domestiques recrutés au Canada au XVII e siècle sont un domaine qui a peu suscité l’intérêt des historiens. En dépit de problèmes méthodologiques inhérents au sujet, la bonne conservation des archives notariales canadiennes autorise néanmoins leur analyse, et nous éclaire sur la nature de la domesticité dans la vallée du Saint-Laurent. Ces salaires se distinguent par la diversité des modalités de paiements bien que les règlements en nature deviennent, tout au long du XVII e siècle, de plus en plus utilisés par les employeurs. Cette tendance est à rapprocher de l’augmentation du nombre de très jeunes domestiques natifs du Canada, une main-d’œuvre enfantine bon marché qui témoigne de la consolidation de la colonie. Quant à ceux rémunérés en espèces, il apparaît qu’ils ne coûtent pas vraiment plus chers que les engagés immigrants, et que les disparités observées dans leurs gages tiennent aussi bien des caractéristiques physiques de la main-d’œuvre, que de la durée de l’engagement, de la conjoncture économique, ou encore du lieu du recrutement.
