Abstract
L’influence d’un livre, de Philippe Aubert de Gaspé fils, et Les révélations du crime, de François-Réal Angers, qui paraissent en 1837, peuvent être considérés comme nos deux premiers romans. La critique tend cependant à y voir des oeuvres dont le statut romanesque aurait été usurpé. Un examen plus attentif des transformations que subit le genre romanesque en France au même moment conduit à réévaluer ce jugement. L’inventaire des liens que ces oeuvres entretiennent avec la forme du journal et avec le roman-feuilleton, l’examen de leur dimension intertextuelle invitent à penser autrement leur horizon d’attente. L’analyse des choix esthétiques d’Angers et d’Aubert de Gaspé fils montre qu’ils ont voulu participer à la nouvelle esthétique romanesque en train de naître en s’appuyant sur une hiérarchisation des pratiques en voie d’établissement et sur l’élection de modèles contemporains.
