Cet article cherche à décrire et à expliquer les composantes de l'action tutorale à l'université. Les auteurs s'appuient sur les recherches menées durant trois ans auprès d'étudiants de premier cycle universitaire et auprès de leurs tuteurs. Ils ont recueilli des données à partir de deux questionnaires et d'une série d'entrevues. L'examen des regards croisés de tuteurs et d'étudiants tutorés fait ressortir la spécificité d'une médiation pédagogique qui n'atteint pas son but mais qui, parallèlement, met de l'avant des tentatives originales de constitution «sur le tas» d'un espace possible d'adaptation pédagogique. De l'analyse émerge la nécessaire adaptation de l'action tutorale aux spécificités des «métiers d'étudiants».
