Cet article se propose d’avancer une explication aux résultats contrastés des évaluations des pôles de compétitivité français, en montrant la réalité protéiforme des pôles tant dans leurs caractéristiques structurelles que dans leurs performances. En appliquant des techniques d’analyse de données aux informations fournies dans les tableaux de bord des pôles, nous faisons émerger une typologie originale des pôles de compétitivité français. Nous avançons alors que la morphologie des pôles influence leurs performances, appelant par la même à la reconnaissance d’objectifs distincts, de critères de performance adaptés et finalement à une gestion plus différenciée du pilotage public de ces méta-organisations.
