Abstract
Cet article s’inscrit dans une réflexion sur l’épreuve de l’exil à partir de l’expérience des Algériens exilés à Montréal à la suite de la guerre civile des années 1990. Ces Algériens constituent une population bien spécifique dans le sens où, bien insérés professionnellement dans leur société, ils n’avaient pas conçu de projet migratoire. Il s’agit de montrer ici en quoi l’intégration professionnelle peut être déterminante en vue du dépassement de l’épreuve de l’exil. Après avoir montré que les trajectoires professionnelles des Algériens en exil sont marquées, au moins les premières années, par une forte déqualification, nous dégagerons deux manières de vivre cette déqualification. Nous verrons que certains la vivent dans les termes du malheur, comme une « carrière brisée », et que d’autres la vivent sur un mode positif, comme une étape inhérente à une « carrière d’immigrant ». La mise en lumière de ces deux interprétations de l’exil relatives à l’insertion professionnelle permet de révéler les contraintes auxquelles doivent faire face les exilés pour intégrer le marché professionnel.
