Abstract
Elsie Reford (1872-1967), philanthrope montréalaise et fondatrice des Jardins de Métis, partageait sa vie entre la métropole et le Bas-Saint-Laurent. À Montréal, elle consacrait temps et énergie aux oeuvres de charité, aux mondanités et à la politique ; à Grand-Métis, la nature et sa famille l’occupaient au premier chef. En examinant le parcours de cette grande bourgeoise à partir principalement de sa correspondance et de ses journaux personnels, il est possible de constater une forte intériorisation du discours des sphères privée et publique. La frontière, concrète et théorique, qui sépare ces deux sphères est mise en lumière par une étude de la spatialisation de ses activités et de l’espace de liberté qu’Elsie Reford se ménageait selon l’endroit où elle se trouvait, à Montréal ou à Grand-Métis.
