Les périodiques juridiques firent leur apparition au Québec au milieu du XIXe siècle. Après quelques balbutiements, ils connurent une croissance soutenue et occupèrent rapidement une place centrale dans la production des imprimés juridiques. Aussi peuvent-ils être considérés comme un véhicule privilégié de la culture juridique savante. De l'ensemble de la production des périodiques, les recueils judiciaires furent, de loin, la forme de revue la plus appréciée par les avocats et les juges. Pour leur part, les notaires, ayant peu à retirer de tels recueils, mirent sur pied une revue à caractère franchement professionnel. D'autres types de périodiques eurent moins de fortune. Ainsi, tous les essais que firent différents groupes pour créer des revues de doctrine se soldèrent par un échec à court ou à moyen terme. Quant aux revues de variétés juridiques, à une exception près, elles ne réussirent pas non plus à s'implanter. Outre qu'ils ont été un instrument de diffusion de la littérature juridique, les périodiques ont joué un rôle non négligeable dans le développement de l'élite intellectuelle de la communauté juridique.
