On propose dans cet article un contenu linguistique à l’oral pour l’école primaire. Un pareil contenu est actuellement absent du Programme d’étude en français, dont l’orientation est inspirée des perspectives fonctionnelles et sociolinguistiques. Ce contenu consiste en un ensemble de variantes soutenues correspondant à des marqueurs stylistiques et respectant certains critères. Il a été expérimenté dans le cadre d’une recherche préliminaire effectuée en classe de 4ème année visant à développer chez l’écolier l’utilisation des variantes soutenues en situation formelle. Les écoliers ont été enregistrés lors de situations de communication et ont participé à des activités métalinguistiques sur une partie du contenu proposé. Les résultats démontrent que (i) les écoliers montrent une variation linguistique suivant la formalité de la situation et ont conscience de cette variation sans être conscients toutefois des variantes impliquées, (ii) suite aux activités métalinguistiques, les élèves ont développé une conscience explicite de plusieurs variantes et ont utilisé davantage de variantes soutenues.
