Abstract Ostrakoden sind in aquatischen Habitaten häufig und weit verbreitet. Ihre fossilen Klappen können, wenn sie aus Sedimenten geborgen und untersucht werden, als Archive der Erdgeschichte dienen. Im Quartär werden sie erfolgreich für die Paläomilieuanalyse in der Paläolimnologie, ‐ozeanografie und –klimatologie verwendet. Auch in der Umweltgeologie lassen sie sich für historische und andere Fragestellungen einsetzen.
