Abstract

Partant d’une théorie sémiotique sur le carnaval et basé sur un terrain extensif en Basse-Ville, à la Chambre de commerce et auprès des organisateurs, j’analyse le rapport du Carnaval aux politiques identitaires et économiques. Mise en scène d’une culture locale réinventée, le Carnaval se veut aussi une entreprise touristique qui gère la promotion de « l’hiver québécois ». La subversion de cette image officielle dans la « zone décarnavalesque » laisse s’exprimer une autre identité qui ne peut fonctionner que par opposition à la culture dominante. Finalement, le carnaval moderne n’exprime plus un univers « cohérent et total » (Bakhtine), mais des cultures hétérogènes traversant l’économie globale.
