Abstract
La description impressionniste des réalités difficiles de la colonisation et de l’esclavage dans Indiana de George Sand a porté plusieurs critiques à considérer l’espace colonial de l’île Bourbon dans le roman comme mythique et symbolique, hors du domaine du réel. De telles appréciations de l’île Bourbon nous ramènent aussi à Paul et Virginie, le roman pastoral de Bernardin de Saint-Pierre qui inspira Sand, et qui se déroule lui aussi dans les îles de l’Océan Indien. Pourtant, un nouvel examen de l’intertexte de Paul et Virginie dans Indiana en termes de différence plutôt que de similitude, en tant que réécriture plutôt qu’en tant qu’emprunt, fait apparaître dans le roman de Sand une connaissance latente de l’histoire de l’expansion coloniale et des bouleversements culturels qu’elle a provoqués. Une fois considéré dans la perspective du métissage culturel inhérent au processus de la colonisation et de la nature fluctuante de l’identité coloniale, le roman de Sand révèle de nombreux exemples de la confrontation de différents peuples dans des relations de pouvoir inégales, de l’émergence d’un discours sur la créolité et de nouvelles catégories raciales.
